Anybody have suggestions? I got myself a Gaggia Evolution and it's pretty good. Can't get it to really give proper crema on an espresso, but that's acceptable cause the quality is still pretty good. My only complaint would be the steam wand. The machine is fairly low, so I need to elevate the whole machine to get a steaming pitcher under it. And it's a plastic wand. not that good.

Using a Nuova Simonelli Granita Grinder on the side, not bad except for a plastic pin that holds the grinder setting which I already wore down in about 6 months. Had to order another part, I'll see if I can get a friend to cast me a copy of it in metal.

marc,

you may want to look at the Nuova Simonelli Oscar Click Here it is a good home machine with commercial components, i.e. steam wand, group head, etc.

Most of the equipment sponsors of the school also make home machines. These will vary in price but feel free to shop around. Always ask if there is an ABC's Graduate Discount. :)

Yeah I was looking at the oscar cause I remembered you talking about it, and I checked a lot of reviews on it, but it was an extra $600! It's about $1000 here, and my Gaggia Evolution machine was $400. (canadian prices)

I'll say one thing, anybody getting a home grinder, make sure the adjuster arm is made of METAL. I've already worn mine down cause it's plastic. Have to wait for the piece to come in stock.

The BCM Junior aka La Valentina is the machine I have at home. It has an E61 brew group and a decent steam wand, Commercial components under the hood make it a solid machine (like a Serai pressurestat). It uses a vibratory pump. Mine is a semi-auto machine and runs approximately $1600. My grinder is a doserless Mazzer Mini electronic model B. This setup is currently working well for me at home.
